Silo Season 3

MATTE PAINTING

Client: Outpost VFX

The first two big wide shots were fun to work on, and months of work with an incredible amount of detail for just a couple of seconds.

The wide shot from the helicopter started off with a huge 48k texture map I painted of the ground, mapping out the fields, tracks and working areas around the silo construction sites.
The distant 3D forest was augmented with 2.5D camera projected fields and masks to create more natural gaps in the trees.  The distant city of Atlanta and the horizon was a matte painting augmented with drone photos I shot looking at Bournemouth town and the surrounding countryside. Finally a DMP paint-over pass on the final 3D renders to take away the CGI edge.

The high shot on the digger was a similar process, starting with the ground texture from the first shot to establish the layout of muddy paths around the construction site, then repainting it all at a higher resolution. Finally a DMP paint-over at the end to add more detail to the 3D elements and to take away the CGI edge.
